The site of Apigliano, in the heart of the Grecia Salentina, is known today through the existence of the now abandoned, but standing, church of Santa Maria, which is known by the local inhabitants as San Lorenzo, and two masserie (large farmhouses), Apigliano Piccolo and Apigliano Grande. Little is known about the medieval village through the documents, commencing in 1354, apart from its tax status.
